If you had Condrew Allen in the Brett Favre pool, give yourself a gold star.
The Packers placed Brett Favre on their roster this afternoon. In order to clear a space for the veteran quarterback's comeback, they put Allen, a reserve cornerback, on injured reserve with a knee injury.
Allen is now the answer to a trivia question. The transaction also reminded us that the Favre situation, which will take another step when Packers coach Mike McCarthy addresses the media tonight, drew some interesting comments from John Madden last week.
Depending on your age, you probably think of Madden as:
A Hall of Fame coach who won a Super Bowl with the Oakland Raiders;
No matter what you think about Madden, his insights on the Favre situation are noteworthy. In an interview late last week with Tony Rizzo of WKNR in Cleveland, Madden compared the Favre situation to a soap opera.
"I think he'll play," Madden told Rizzo. "I'm not sure that he'll play in Green Bay. I think he should. It looks like Minnesota is making a pretty heavy move there... "
Asked why the Packers wouldn't want Favre back, Madden said: "I don't have all the facts. It has to be something that makes sense. If I just say to you, would you rather have Aaron Rodgers and Brett Favre as your quarterbacks, in any order, or would you rather have Aaron Rodgers and two rookies? Of course you want (Favre) in, just to compete.
"If something happened to Aaron Rodgers, the way they are now, and they had to go to a rookie, their season would be lost."
Madden thinks Favre will play. "I hope that he goes back to Green Bay," he said. "I wouldn't like to see him play for anyone else, really."
