The Marquette University Department of Performing Art's production of Dick Enberg's McGuire, the one-man play about legendary Marquette basketball coach Al McGuire, will return to the Helfaer Theatre at Marquette in June 2006. Distinguished actor Cotter Smith will reprise his role as McGuire. The show originally debuted at Marquette in June 2005 to sell out performances.
Specific dates and times of performances will be announced at a later date. Tickets will go on sale April 10 through the Helfaer Theatre Box Office.
The play was written by renowned sportscaster and multiple Emmy Award-winner Dick Enberg, a close friend of McGuire's. Those who saw Al McGuire lead the 1977 Marquette basketball team to the national championship knew him to be quite a character. McGuire was a leader on and off the court, and the people of Milwaukee adopted the Brooklyn native as one of their own.
The play revisits Al's inimitable wit and wisdom, as the audience listens to him reminisce about his life from the streets of Brooklyn to his days at Marquette and his travels as a sportscaster with CBS. Enberg's deeply moving tribute reminds theatre goers once again why the philosophy of this one uncommonly funny and profound man, had such an important and lasting impact on so many.
